First time on Manquehue
Summit Views & Gear Reviews: Our Sunday Hike Up Cerro Manquehue
For anyone living in or visiting Santiago, Chile, the silhouette of Cerro Manquehue is a constant, inviting presence on the horizon. It stands as a daily challenge, a promise of incredible views just beyond the city bustle. Last Sunday, a few of us from work decided to answer the call, swapping our keyboards for trekking poles on an early morning excursion.

The plan was simple: start early and be back before noon. And I’m happy to report, mission accomplished! This urban hike turned out to be the perfect blend of challenge and reward, and a great real-world test for some of our favorite gear.
The Ascent: Not as Tough as It Looks!
We hit the trail early, joining a friendly stream of fellow hikers making their way up. The atmosphere was fantastic—a shared sense of purpose and a lot of “buenos días” exchanged along the path.
The climb itself was a pleasant surprise. I’d heard stories, but it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I’d anticipated. The trail is well-defined and feels very similar to the final push up its smaller sibling, Cerro Manquehuito. The main difference is that it’s a longer, more sustained effort. There are a few sections where you’ll want to use your hands for balance, but it’s nothing dangerous or overly technical. It’s a fantastic challenge for an active family with teens or any group looking for a solid workout with a payoff.

Gear Logic: The Tech and Threads That Got Us There
A good hike is always a great opportunity to put our gear to the test. Here’s the breakdown of what worked and what we learned.
The Command Center: Garmin Fenix Watch
My Garmin Fenix was the undisputed MVP of the day. On a climb like Manquehue, where the grade changes constantly, pacing is key. The watch’s elevation profile feature was a game-changer, allowing us to see exactly what kind of climb was ahead. This was incredibly helpful for managing our energy, knowing when to push, and when to conserve. Tracking our progress in real-time kept morale high and turned the hike into a measurable achievement.

The Foundation: The North Face Hedgehog 3 WP Shoes
You can’t enjoy the views if your feet are hurting. My trusty The North Face Hedgehog 3 WP shoes were flawless. They provided excellent grip on the dusty, rocky sections and offered sturdy support when we needed to scramble. No slips, no blisters, just confident footing all the way to the top. When a piece of gear performs so well you forget you’re even wearing it, you know you’ve got a winner.
The Lesson Learned: To Layer or Not to Layer
We started in the cool morning air, so packing windbreakers seemed like a no-brainer. But as we climbed, the sun and the effort quickly warmed us up. The windbreakers came off and ended up tied around our waists for the rest of the hike! We were perfectly comfortable in just our t-shirts. It’s a classic mountain lesson: be prepared, but don’t be afraid to shed layers. A lightweight, packable jacket is key.

Victory at the Summit
After a steady 1 hour and 30 minutes of climbing, we reached the peak. And the view? Absolutely worth it. Sprawling panoramas of the entire Santiago basin, framed by the majestic Andes, lay before us. It’s a perspective that makes you appreciate the scale of both the city and the nature surrounding it. We snapped the obligatory summit photo, refueled with some water and snacks, and soaked it all in.

The descent was quick and easy, taking us just 1 hour to get back to the trailhead. We were back in the city before noon, feeling energized and accomplished.
If you’re looking for a rewarding half-day adventure in Santiago, Cerro Manquehue gets a huge thumbs-up from the Gear Logic team. It’s accessible, challenging enough to feel like a real achievement, and delivers some of the best views around. Just be sure to pack smart, trust your gear, and enjoy the climb
